Hi
I had had palpitationsHeart palpitations since September 2005. Before that date I was fine. I was being treated for high LDLLdl test and because I had a calcium score test ate the highest percentiles for my age (52 at that time) I was referred for e stress test which revealed no occlusion of my coronaries. Few months later I saw an elecrophysiologist who put me on holterHolter monitor (24h) for one month and did not give any importance to my problem. Tried with ideral (atelonol) and something similar but a more modern medication (BetaBlocker). With no success. My PVC would be sometime every other beat for hours. Later on I tried on coregCoreg Coreg cr, calcium channel blockers without success.
I use to drink wine beers and other hard liquor such as scotch socially though never getting drunk. I was told that alcohol triggers palpitations. I tried for a months not to get any alcohol and had no improvement.
Initially, I would sleep well at night and for most of the morning I would feel fine. Palps started when I would have breakfast and especially if I used carbs such as honey chocoloates etc. Also around 5 PM time to go home I would have some but on my way to the train few hundred yards I would ot feel anything. Once at the train sitting or standing my heart would start pounding my chest. During the evening I would be fine. Even when I had any during that time once in bed pals would be gone.
Few days before PVC started I had a root canal of an infected tooth. For sometime I thought probably the materials they put inside the canal my somehow trigger palpitations. After almost three years now that substance should have been absorbed and metabolized so that theory lost value.
Since Semptember 2005 I have been maintaining my weight constant at around 184lb. I am 5 7 tall. Since sempteber 2007 I have gaing around 5 pounds and I can not drop them again. No changes on my palpitations related to this narrow weight variation.
Last year I went back to my native country. To cope with jet leg my mom gave me one of sleeping pills she uses, loran, which is similar to valium. I slep well those days. I also took a pack of 20 tablets with me when I came back. Usually I have difficulty getting asleep if I stay late at night to work or watching tv. So I used those pills. Not only I would sleep very well but I was feeling fine and noticed that for few days later I would be palp free. I went ot my primary care doctor and told him that and he instead of giving me valium told me to try xanax. I tried it but did not notice the effect that valium gave me.
I also remember that when my father had a stroke for months he had PVC. I suggested my doctor this too, (especially in relation to the beneficial effects of valium) that palpitation might be central in origin something that he did not exclude but did not admit either.
And by that time we are in january 2008 and then february and the allergy season started and I started getting nasal spray for study nose. For three months in which I used that once a day or twice I had not palpitaions at all. Almost fogot about them. And I was wandering how in my age soemthing like that would disappear.
Until few days ago when they started again. This time though the picture is different. I am having them at night and I cant sleep. I measure the BP and heart rate at those times and see that blodd pressure is low and heart rate is at 45-55. At night at 2 or 3 AM I go to the kitchen and start working our with dumbells or strange enough start drinking red wine just the bottom of the glass. That seems to make me feel better and most of the time I go bakc to sleep. While the red wine make me feel good the white wine is for sure a trigger. I have noticed that each time I drink white wine I feel very bad for two or three days in a row.
The other things that I wanted to mention here is that when young I have been a professionla soccer player and have continued ot play soccer until few years ago when I started having problems in both my knees.
Hope this helps at list to gather some information about possible causes of this very bothersome condition
