Any palpitations that are accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath should be further evaluated by a licensed physician where a complete history and physical can be performed.  If initial testing is negative (blood work, ECG), further diagnostic approaches can be performed such as a holter monitor -- which might be able to catch some of these events on a recorded monitor for further evaluation. Other testing might include an echocardiogram to look for any structural abnormalities of the heart.

There are a number of different causes of palpitations (PVC's/PAC's, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, AVNRT) -- some of which are benign, and some which might indicate treatment.
