palpitations

Dear Doctor,
Because of depressive issues, my doctor prescribed for me an ssri antidepressant. I noticed in the beginning of this that i'd have heart flutters, mostly in the evening, when lying down.  just a few, causing me to just take a deep breath, and that's it.  i do have mild mitral valve prolapse.  do big deal, just need to pre medicate before any procedures.  i guess what i'd like to know is,  could this med be damging my heart in any way?  And just what is it that causes these palpitations when i take this med?
I'm curious because when my daughter uses her asthma inhaler, she gets such a pounding, racing heart for a few minutes, and now i can understand how this must feel for her.  any reply will be greatly appreciated, and, I know you can't tell me what to do, being i'm not your patient, but do you think i should stop this med?  other than the palps, it's been almost side effect free.
thank you,
geri

HI Carol
I'm sorry I didn't see your posting til today.  No, unfortunately I didn't notice any good results from the med.  I did notice an increase in activity.  Almost like being a little hyper.  This does not mean it will not work for you.  Have you have any more pvc-s?  Let me know if you feel any postitive effects.  It was a disappointment for me to end the celexa, because it gave me hardly any side effects at all, except for mild headaches and nausea in the beggining.  And who knows, maybe the skipped beats were just anxiety related.!  Of course you may post your e mail..    I'll respond.

Geri, I read you post.  I am also on Celexa (1 week now), and have noticed a couple of runs of PVC's.  Do you feel any different on the Celexa? I haven't noticed a difference yet.

Please respond.  I would like to correpond via e-mail. I will send you my e-mail address if you would like.

Give it a couple of months and see if it subsides...SSRI's can have a slightly stimulant effect on the system.  Bring these effects to the attention of your doctor.  I was on Prozac (an SSRI) and Ritalin (a stimulant) had to pack them up when my heart began racing...but this is rare.  These drugs may also affect your libido and cause stomach upsets of the poohy kind lol.  When they work though they work well.

Take care.

This type of antidepressant seems to be very safe for the heart. Some patients do describe palpitations with these medications and that is worth bringing to the attention of your doctor. Asthma inhalers cause palpitations for entirely different reasons; especially with some of the over-the-counter inhalers, this can be dangerous.
