post-op care

by Carole__0, Jan 13, 1999 12:00AM

My 85 yr. old dad will be having revascularization surgery
(femoral-popliteal bypass).  He was told there was some obstruction
behind his left knee following an angiogram.  He is a diabetic.  How
long does it usually take to see if the revascularization was
sucessful? Will his foot be pink right away?  What can family members do to help
help for the best possible outcome?  He is having this surgery because he
is experiencing some numbness in his left foot.  He is in good general
health.  His blood sugar last week was 141.  He is a non-insulin
dependant diabetic.  Are people generally in intensive care following this
operation?  He lives in Baltimore.  Although we are having a blizzard
at present, I plan to travel there before his operation next week.
What should I ask his surgeon after surgery?

Dear Carole,
Thank you for your question.
Q:  How long does it usually take to see if the revascularization was
successful? Will his foot be pink right away?
A: Generally an improvement is noted right away.
Q: What can family members do to help help for the best possible outcome?
A: Being supportive and keeping him in good spirits is always a help to both patient and doctor.
Q: What should I ask his surgeon after surgery?
A: Questions such as post-op care once he gets home, prevention of further complications, etc. are all good questions.
