Pravastatin is metabolized differently from the other traditional statins which utilize the CYP3A4 isoenzyme. Dependin on what your other medications are, there may be an interaction that your prescribing physician may have been concerned about. Otherwise, there is not a significant difference in the effect between the two given your current lipid profile. Also, historically pravastatin has been available as a generic drug ($4 Walmart formulary) but atorvastatin should also be available now for a similar price.
