by madhurami, Nov 10, 2009 05:00PM

I STARTED USING THE TABLETS METROPROLOL TARTRATE AND IT GAVE ME A BIT OF RELEIF. OTHERWISE I HAVE TO GASP FOR AIR EVEN IF IA M RESTING/SLEEPING. DOES IT EFFECT THE FOETUS?

Dear Dr.
Greetings from PaPuea New Guinea. I am in my 9 th week of pregnancy and experiencing shortness of breath attacks already experienced twice. One on Sunday 1st November and the other on on Friday 6th November. I had a nebuilisation followed by oxyzen in taken for 20 minutes. I was prescribed salbutamal  tablets for 4 days WHEN FIRST ATTACK CAME.

Date of last period: 4-9-9
Period: 30 days
Duration of period 6-7 days
Weight : 72 kg ( no gain , weight reduced from 75kg in January to 72kg in april and since then constant  due to exercises before pregnancy)
No vomiting, slight headache, dizziness sometimes, no malaria.
BP normal.
ECG normal.

Between 6 th and 8 th weeks – progesterone supplements
Medication folic acid – 2tablets twice a day.

The local Pilipino Gynecologist referred me to Pilipino  internist.
The prescribed diagnosis by the local doctor is have 2D echo, which is not available in my town for that I have to fly to capital PORTMORESBY duration 45 minutes.

Is it safe to fly in the first trimester? I am also not convinced with the diagnosis of mitral valve prolapsed and a prescription of “ Metroprolol tartrate” 50 mg ½ tablet twice a day for 60 days. The drug is classified as
pregnancy cat.

During my first pregnancy I didn’t have this kind of problem. I took bedrest in the first trimester. That’s all.

This time also I am mostly on bed rest for 2 weeks after that , just cooking with the help of maid. The second attack I got when I started cooking. We are staying in a duplex house. I am  climbing  5 to 6 times a day. The weather is rapidly changing from extreme hot to rain . Summer here. Allergic to exposure of Air conditioner since 1st November. It is aggravating my shortness of breath. I am allergic to cigarette smoke.

I had no history of asthma. Don’t know what is triggering shortness of breath the sudden weather changes/tiredness .

Kindly suggest what should be taken and the medicine is it advised to take the tablets as prescribed.

If you require any further information please ask me.
