When babies are born, they would normally take their first breath and blood pressure in the lungs would drop. At this time an artery called the ductus arteriosus would constrict and close up. This vessel is used in the womb to bypass the oxygenated blood from the mother away from the lungs and enable it to go to the heart to be pumped around the body. Sometimes after birth this vessel doesn't close or doesn't close completely and can cause problems. However, this is just one of many possibilities. Another possibility coming to light from recent research is medication consumed by the mother, such as blood pressure meds or even aspirin. There is quite a large group of meds believed to cause pulmonary hyp in babies, even ibuprofen. It shouldn't take long for Doctors to discover the cause.
