rapid pounding heart rate at bedtime

For a year now I have been experiencing rapid heart rate at bedtime, as soon as I lay down I can feel my heart beating/ pounding, sometimes it feels like it is doing somersaults in my chest and I get a very uncomfortable feeling in my throat. My doc had put me on Phentermine 37.5 mg for weight loss prior to this issue and I have had this feeling since then he said it was a normal side effect. I took that for a 2 months then stopped due to a potential drug to drug interaction but the symptoms haven't stopped. I have the feeling of impending doom. I spoke with a cardiologist and he told its probably just stress. Should I have a work up done. Does it sound like a serious issue

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Awareness of your heartbeat is termed as palpitation and it can be due to hyperthyroidism( overactive thyroid), arrhythmias (altered electrical system of the heart), certain medications, heart failure, anemia and low blood sugar. It can be aggravated by exercise, fever, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and dehydration. Anxiety, fear or stress can cause palpitations. You should consult your primary care physician for therapy. He will examine you and may ask for blood tests and an EKG.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

I have a similar problem. Heart rate increases about 90 mins into sleep. Several things can cause this, one being if you lie perfectly flat and you have a upper stomache herniation part of stomache slips up into esophagus and makes heart work harder. If you sit up it should subside. If not this, then try sleeping with upper half of boady elevated. When you lay flat or on side, blood or fluids can pool and make heart work harder, Heart is working faster because something is giving the command to it to supply more blood and or oxygen. I would do some research and self tests, Try lieing down in daytime, see if it happens, see if food related, if activity related and see if you drink water and stand up if it subsides. Your body will give you clues, listen to it and good luck!
