replacing pacemaker

Due to a recalled defibrillator my husband had a terrible experience when he was shocked about 30 times with a horrible painful "kick in the chest".  It was replaced with a new lead that is supposed to be better.  He had had this Medronics device for two years and was leading a normal life.....exercised, slept well, and managed his health care before all this happened.   Now with the new defibrillator, after three weeks, he's developed an infection.  The surgeon feels that this pacemaker, defibrillator will have to be removed.  My husband is very anxious......What can we expect now?
