I need to know a list of things that my defribulator can be affected by? I work in a metalurgical labratory and use a scaning electron microscope , X-ray spectrograph and other lab equiptment. My doctors are not sure about my hobbie of building cars. Can I weld, use power tools, etc. Any help would be apreciated. Mike

Dear Finn,
In general anything with a strong magnetic field can affect a defibrillator.  Arc welding is not usually allowed due to the electronic field it generates.  X-rays and power tools are OK.  I don't know about an electron microscope. My guess is that it is OK.  It would depend of what kind of electronic field it generates.  One option may be to have a representative of the defibrillator company come to your work place and interrogate your device there.  You could also call the company directly and speak with someone in their technical support office.  Hope this helps.

You might check to see if your defibrillator manufacturer has a web site.  Medtronic.com has a section for patient information that has a subsection for patients with defibrillators.  I also understand they are very helpful if you call or email questions.
