severe breathing problems

I had triple bypass surgery on 12-5-07. Everything has been fine up to the middle of December. I have trouble breathing and I cannot lie in any position in a bed or couch without gasping for air. I think the problem could be side effects of 50mg of Metoprolol. Cardiologist put me on Lasix to remove excess water. Never had any breathing problems before the surgery and I could sleep in any position and breathe great. I was given meds for anxiety attacks and those problems are gone. Why do I feel that I cannot get a good full breath of air in my lungs without laboring to do so. Does the Lasix make sense? Please help, getting tired of sleeping in a chair and getting about 3 hours sleep each night.

Thank you for responding to my problem. They did open up the rib cage area and that could be the problem because of the tight feeling in the chest. I have no swelling of the feet, legs or ankles. My weight stays the same. Doctors said it could be water retention in or around the lung area. I have several more apts. coming up with the doctors. Again thanks to all.

If they opened your chest (vs some new minimally invasive surgery) then it may be the rib spreading.  Rib injuries are very painful and take a LONG time to heal.  Just a thought...I am NOT a medical professional.  I injured my ribs several years ago and the muscles spasmed which gave me a lot of pain and made it hard to breathe.  I also couldn't sleep on my left side for a long time.

I think your symptoms warrant a follow up call to the doctor.  Do you know any ankle or leg swelling?  You may want to weigh yourself each morning to see if you're retaining fluid.  Lasix is a common medication for removing excess fluid.

Hope you are feeling better very soon.
