: Good morning.  I have been reading entries in here because I too have what started as what I thought was problems from a hiatal hernia (tightness, spasms in the hernia's area).  then I was also told that I now have a irregular heartbeat on top of it.  It seems like my irregular heartbeat  being worse coincides with eating.  If I eat a heavy meal, or sometimes anything, it becomes pronounced and I happened to have lucked out and stopped at my doc's office to have my blood pressure checked two weeks ago and had eaten about an hour before that.  I was having one of those "irregular heartbeat sessions" when I stopped, but wasn't concerned because they were getting to be daily sessions and I figured they couldn't be too much to worry about because I had them so much in the lst two months.  Well, the nurse took my blood pressure which was find, but then when she took my pulse, she called a doc in and he felt my pulse and listened to my chest and asked if he could take an EKG because my heartbeat was very irregular and he was worried.  So they took TWO right after each other and the heartbeats were very irregular.  Which they usually feel like they are after I eat.  So why is that?  If you find out, could you email me a response, because I sure would like to know.  I was just given that heart halter test at the end of last week, and should find out the results of it either today or tomorrow and I am scheduled to see a cardiaolotist next Monday.  I am really not overly concerned, but would just like to get an answer to what is happening to me and my health.  I am not an athlete, but do walk three-four times a week, etc.  Anyway, I sure would appreciate anything you come up with that relates to what you talked about in your message.  the one great thing is this webpage which makes you feel that at least you aren't alone with these kinds of symptoms.  My spasms seem to start in the middle of my stomach area (above my bellybutton) and then move upwards.  I had an endoscopy, but the upper part of my stomach and esoupghogus looks ok other than a hiatal hernia that wasn't very bad.

Dear Sherry:
I have heard many patients state that their irregular heart beats are related to eating (among other activities). This can be due to the fact that some food substances (such as caffeine) exacerbate irregular heart beats. This can also be due to the fact that the food pipe passes right behind the heart and irritation of the food pipe can be transmitted to the heart. Another possibility is that it is just coincidence.
I hope this is useful. Feel free to write back with further questions.
