statin usage and cardiomyopathy:

by chancellor, Sep 15, 2007 06:22PM
There is a great deal of information suggesting that statins interfer with the co-enzyme ubiquinone
COQ10.   My GP gave me a scrip for Lovastatin last week....I am reluctant to use it.  Any opinions or
experiences from the group?  Thanks, Chancellor

I've been on 20mg of Zocor for the last 4 yrs and never had a problem.

I take vitorin (zocor and zetia) as well as a multivitamin with 30 mg a day CoQ10 (low dose). The subject of statins depleting CoQ10 is controversial.  Clinical trials haven't definitiely established that a depletion occurs. The name of the enzyme is called ubiquinone because it is ubiquitous in nature and found in all plant and animal tissue. So your normal diet gives you huge doses of it. Don't let your concern about CoQ10 depletion stop you from taking your statin prescription.
