sternum wires after cabbage surgery a year and half ago

by laurie709, Oct 31, 2009 12:22PM
I am a diabetic and recently after having 5 bypasses about a year and a half ago I started getting loud clicking and popping sounds under my right breast bone...after xrays I was told by the heart doctor that the sternum wires during the surgery had broken and he was having me do a catscan to see how bad it was., He said the last thing we wanted to dowas to have anyone surgically go back inside me. I nearly died after the surgery from kidney failure. I am very scared, He said because I am diabetic he is worried about infection and slow healing. He said he had never had it happen in his practice before.   I am very worried....can't they do some out patient laser surgery to repair or replace the wires.,...what are my options? Thanks

The only way to repair the wire is to go back in and fix it.  However, as long as your sternum is stable there really is no need to anything at this point.  So, I would not be overly worried about it.  As long as you can do most things without any discomfort and the popping doesn't bother you too much you can probably go on without any surgery.
