strength training and short breath

is it possible for strength training to damage the heart?i am 43 yrs male.i developed shortness of breath and palpitations after doing weights in hot, humid weather.the ECG and echo show normal except for slight supra-ventricular tachycardic beats.my doctor told me nothing to worry.i stopped weights and started walks.the shortness of breath disappeared.however a few times since then  i have been getting very irregular beats lasting a few seconds each time.this has not been recorded on the machines since it doesnt always come..what i wish to know is how safe it is to take up strength training again after this experience.could the weights have damaged the heart in any way?i like to do weights for psychological benefits and for general fitness.
thnx

Hello,

It is reasonable to check a holter or event monitor to try and capture the beats that are causing your symptoms.  From what you describe it sounds like a pac/pvc.  Depending on your physical exam, an echo may or may not be indicated.

could the weights have damaged the heart in any way?

People with pre-existing valvular heart disease like mitral valve prolapse can damage their valve apparatus with heaving weight lifting, but this is rare.

I agree that physical fitness is very important for pyschological wellness.  Talk to your doctor about these tests so you can start working out again without worring.
