syncope/EP Dr.

syncope/EP Dr.

Hi, thanks for taking my question.  I am 41 F normal weight, don't smoke. BP 120/80.   I've had 3 episodes of syncope in the last couple months, transported to hospital the last time. At the hospital I was told I was in atrial fibrillation? They stopped it with some type of IV med.  Followed up with family Dr. who sent me to cardio, because of abnormal EKG. and heart murmur. Cardio listened to heart (said I had a murmur) and did EKG (abnormal) and would like to send me to an EP Dr. for an EP study.  Echo was normal except for MVP which was mild. Cardio would like to put me on a medicine, but I told him I would think about it.

My questions 1.  Is it reasonable to have an EP study because of syncope? 2.  Is their any relationship between atrial fibrillation and syncope?

Other Posters:  Please feel free to comment, esp. those who have encountered atrial fibrillation.

Thank you,

marching,

thanks for the post.

Both syncope and atrial fibrillation are common diagnoses. However, in a young person atrial fibrillation generally shouldnt cause frank syncope unless associaed with other cardiac disease either structural (such as valvular heart disease) or electrical (such as a bypass tract).

It is not unreasonable to see an EP for your fibrillation. I would have to know the rest of your history to understand why they want to do an EP study.

good luck

Hi, I think anytime a family doctor sends you to an EP doctor - he has your best interests at heart.  EP's are the most qualified doctors to address your electrical system.  Most patients don't even get in to see an electrophysiologist.  I would go to one and see what he has to say.  I would think anytime you experience syncope its serious.  I'm not a doctor.

Best Wishes
Marilyn
