systolic murmur

by PR, Jun 23, 2001 12:00AM
I was dx with a grade II blowing systolic murmur when I was 24.  The MD's do not know why.  It radiates to my neck.  Please tell me what this means.  Is this an "innocent" murmur?  I have read that this means I have a stenosis, but all of my echos indicate nothing about that.  All of my heart valves leak mildly, with the exception of my aortic valve which now leaks moderately.  I am a 48 y/o female.

Dear rp,

A left sided systolic murmur is consistent with either aortic stenosis or mitral regurgitation.  The gold standard of course is the echocardiogram and if that shows neither of those then I would conclude that it is an innocent murmur.
