taking atenolol for chest pain

by l13l13, Feb 26, 2009 06:31PM
THREE WEEKS AGO A CARDIOLOGIST PRESCRIBED 12.5 MG ATENOLOL QD FOR CHEST PAIN I HAVE HAD MY WHOLE LIFE. I AM 49 YEARS OLD. THE CHEST PAIN WAS INCREASINGLY MORE FREQUENT AND MORE PAINFUL SO I WANT TO SEE A CARDIOLOGIST. ABOUT 2 DAYS AFTER STARTING THE MEDICATION I NO LONGER HAVE CHEST PAIN. I KNOW THAT ATENOLOL IS A BETA BLOCKER,  BUT I DO NOT QUITE UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS THAT THE PAIN HAS STOPPED. WHAT WOULD MY DIAGNOSIS BE AT THIS POINT. I DO HAVE A FOLLOW UP WITH THE CARDIOLOGIST IN 4 WEEKS. I AM JUST VERY INTERESTED IN WHY THE PAIN STOPPED WITH SUCH A LOW DOSE OF ATENOLOL AND EXACTLY WHAT THIS MEANS.  THANK YOU

Atenolol is the generic for Tenormin.  Atenolol decreases the blood pressure and heart rate.  It does not stay at constant levels throughout the day and does not work 24 hours.  I am not sure why it helped your chest pains.  Did you have high blood pressure or a fast or irregular heart beat?
