teen with afib

teen with afib

my son, now 18yrs old, was dx with laf last year. He was on propafenone for 8mo, then taken off.. After 2wks off,he had 2 episdes in one month, resolved with 2 doses of prop each time.He had pacs&pvcs that have subsided(that he is aware of)& has had no further episodes of laf.Last holter-minimal ectopics (9)
?s 1) he's going to college with propafenone150mgs "in his pocket"--is he at risk for proarrythmias if he needs it,since hes been off it for 4 mo? 2) Will alcohol consumption cause him to go back into af which i'm sur he'll probably engage in at college even tho i've stressed this subject with him. 3) He was very active in sports in high school..do you think the stress of basketball ,especially, could have caused this to occur..ie running, sweating decreased fluids pvcs etc..why one child and not another? He's 6'3 195lbs..no other med problems..just mild allergies, mild scoliosis.  4)Of note he thinks this happened before within the previous year of dx butit went away after sleep..he thought it a fast heart from exercise and never mentioned it . 5) one month prior he was on cefzil and zyrtec for ? sinus infection...any connection with either med?  i remember reading something with the heart re seldane in the past.
Sorry for the length and thank you for your response...Just a concerned mom.

ozark,

Provided your son has undergone an EKG and echo, and provided they were normal, then we can say that your son likely has lone afib.  The natural history of lone afib is that it is benign, meaning that the people who have afib suffer no lasting ill effects from the condition.

(1) If he indeed has lone afib, taking propafenone on an as needed basis should be safe.  (2) Alcohol may or may not precipitate afib in your son; it's possible but not definite.  (3) Exercise is good for your son provided he's otherwise healthy. (4) I don't know what dx butit is !?  (5)  No relation between cefzil/zyrtec and afib exists to my knowledge.

Wish your son well.
