time for a statin???

Over the past 6 years my numbers have been steadily rising:(05, 07, 09)

HDL:  63, 73, 90(latest reading)
LDL:  147, 162, 191(latest)
Tri  63, 73, 79 (latest)

My ratio is still decent and I already exercise and eat pretty healthy. I am about 30 lbs overweight.  My doc thinks that the 191 is WAY too high and wants me to go on statins now.  I would like to try to lose some weight first. Is it possible to lower the 191 to an acceptable range with diet and exercise? My grandparents on moms side both had heart/ stroke issues.  I am 46 year old female, great blood pressure and  blood sugars.

I have great hdl (thanks to fish oil and regular exercise!) but is that enough?

Thanks,
Wendy
