Sorry to hear you're having some trouble with your blood pressure.  I agree with your physician that 156/66 is too high.  Your blood pressure should be below 130/80, with lower being even better if tolerated.  Many things contribute to high blood pressure including age, genetics, weight, diet, exercise.  It sounds like you're on the right track with your exercise.  Aggressive diet and exercise can often get patients off of their medications altogether, especially if couple with weight loss.  Even a small amount of weight loss can lead to significant improvements in blood pressure.  Your medication regimen appears appropriate.  Keep in mind that going to your doctor may also cause anxiety which can significantly elevated blood pressure.  This is often called "white coat" syndrome--patients get elevated blood pressure in the doctor's office due to anxiety but their blood pressure may be perfectly normal at home.  Try checking your blood pressure every morning at home and follow the trend.  Take a home blood pressure cuff to your physician's office to make sure it reads in the same range as the one your doctor uses.  And keep exercising!  It is better than any medicine we can prescribe...

Best of luck to you.

Good Day,
I am 58 and have had high blood pressure since I was 35. At that time and still today, I am under a lot of stress. I also suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and take medication for that along with amlodipine besylate, 5 mg. anymore than that and my ankles swell up. I also take 12.5 mg atenolol and anymore than that and it causes palpitations. I also take Atacand 16 mg. and Clonidine, 0.1 mg. I don't know why my blood pressure can't be controlled either. It is frustrating to go to the doctor hoping to get some good numbers but I never do. As for your BP being 156/66, that is fantastic! I wouldn't be worried at all about it. As we age, our numbers do tend to go up so don't worry yourself to the point of anxiety, that makes things worse.
My doctor and I have gone the rounds about my situation and for months I have tried to explain that I believe my BP remains high due to the stress. My husband is disabled from a major car accident and before that, he almost died from a bowel rupture and now he has congestive heart failure. My days are filled with caring for him and worrying.
I was a nurse and had to retire so I could care for my husband. I've done a ton of research on natural remedies and may I suggest a couple for you to try. Take 300 mg. of COQ-10 a day, 500 mg. magnesium and 4,000 IUs of vitamin D3. Get plenty of potassium in your diet as well. I've read that low sodium V8 works very well and you get other nutrients besides. Hope these things help you and good luck. Oh, keep walking on your treadmill for the exercise won't hurt you it's good for the heart even if you don't think it's helping lower your numbers.
