unexplanable Chest pain

My fiance is 26, fairly healthy. He smokes but isn't overweight, he's active daily. For about 2 years now he's been getting sharp pains in the left side of his chest. He isn't sure it's his heart but he says the pain feels like somebody stabbing him through the ribs with a knife. He gets short of breath and it hurts to move. When I first met him in June 2008 they would happen maybe once a month, with no warning or reason. He could be standing, laying in bed reading, or anything. Now it seems like they are much more painful, and happen more frequently. A few days ago it happened in the morning while he was doing some light work, then it happened back to back that night. He does have a history of busted ribs from when he was younger and heart problems run in his family. I am so worried every time it happens. It usually only lasts 2-5 minutes but the last time he said his left shoulder was tingling. I got him some Bayer aspirin just in case and to make me feel better. He can't afford a doctor visit so any guesses or advice would be appreciated. He is under a lot more stress now..could that be contributing to it?
Thanks!

I really think that your fiance needs urgent medical attention, let him borrow the money from a friend or family member. But he needs to see a doctor
