I would like to know what criteria determines whether a tissue valve or mechanical valve is used? I'm 49yrs old. At a previous visit to my cardiologist, he recommended a mech. valve. After todays visit he then recommmeded a tissue valve.  I thought tissue valves were recommended for older patients. Doesn't a tissue valve last only about 10yrs? I know the mech. valve lasts indefinitly but you have to be on coumadin for the rest of your life. What are the pro's and con's for each type of valve? Thank You
