water retention

water retention

I had triple bypass 57 days ago. I have a fairly large lump or mass in my right side from the front center area of my stomach to my right side. It is very unconfortable and even painful at times [6 or 7] on a 10 scale. Had a cat scan done this past friday and they maintain this area and mass is fluid retention and that in time my body will absorbe this fluid. Is this common with this operation ? If so , how long must one expect to be in this misery ? Other than this problem , I am doing quite well......no problems with the incisions and have started cardiac rehab , but am in almost constant dis confort from the fluid mass. BTW , you can easily see the mass as well as feel it and I would describe it as about the size and shape of a Jr football. Is this common or what??

No it is not common in my experience, in the sense that it is localized to a specific area and  is very tender. Fluid collections like that, in my experience usually need draining, as they have a risk of becoming infected. Is it red, or are you having any fevers, chills or night sweats? These could be early signs of infection. Draining these should be performed in the OR under very sterile conditions.
