what is going on with me and is it life threatening

I think i have had occasions of a racing heart beat since 1992 i have always put it down to panic attack which usually occur at night now i think they were due to stress induced by my achoholic husband at the time. It became an irregular heart beat in 2007 when i was 32wks pregnant with my daughter. Ive not been on any medication so far for it but they frighten me and induce a panic attack. My heart races and i get mild chest pains on the left hand side of my chest but i dont know whether this is just coincidence or because my breathing gets irratic due to the hypoventilation. They think i had artieral fibulation this one time in my pregnancy, is this life threatening? I think its worse when im due on and am stressed. I have heard lots of horror stories of blood clots or sudden death?? Im terrified. I have 5 children to look after and like to feel like im in control of myself but with this i have no control at all. Im waiting to get it on an ecg to see what it is but as of yet its always too late!!! can anyone offer help or advice??
