What is ventricular bigemy, causes and treatment?

Ventricular bigeminy refers to extra beats that originate in the lower chambers of the heart (ventricles) and occur every other (bigeminy) beat.

In some cases, there is a cause, but more often they just occur.  The important thing is to be checked out to be sure the person has a structurally normal heart.  In that case, they are generally considered benign.

There are a number of common triggers for extra beats (caffeine, lack of sleep, etc), but sometimes there is no identifiable cause.

In the setting of a structurally normal heart, most doctors will encourage the patient to accept the beats.  In symptomatic patients, some doctors will prescribe beta blockers.
