MVP indicates the mitral valve leaflet doesn't fully close a one- way valve opening that exists between the left upper chamber and lower chamber, and some blood back flows into the upper chamber with each heartbeat.
Having a dilated left atrium is an indication of one of two things, either a dilated left ventricle or a disease of the mitral valve whether stenosis (narrowing of valve opening) or regurgitation .
Worst case scenario if the left atrium is dilated and serious the risks include:
1. Blood stagnation inside the atrium, blood clot formation inside the atrium and the risk of this blood clot breaking and causing a stroke if it travels to the brain.
2. Heart rhythm becoming irregular.
Trivial regurgitation is not considered serious and should not present a medical problem. Not an uncommon condition.
