15 year old with complete heart block/bradycardia

My son was oringinally diagnosed with bradycardia w/ a first degree block 3 years ago.  His diagnosis changed in August after his routine treadmill we discovered that he now has a 3rd degree block.  He is an athlete and plays basketball.  His doctor said that he doesn't want to put in a pacemaker at this time.  I am concerned because everything I research says that a pacemaker should be inserted if you have a 3rd degree/complete block.  Should I get a second opinion?  Is he safe to play basketball?  Will he be able to continue basketball after a pacemaker?

Sorry to read about any youngster with heart problems, sending my sympathy and best wishes.

I read in the "related discussions" that a 3rd degree block strongly suggests implementation of a pacemaker.  I am not arguing with your doctor's advice, but from what I read a second opinion may be helpful.

Perhaps someone with a pacemaker who is also an active athlete will give input on playing basketball with pacemaker.  I'd guess no.
