5 box thoracoscopic maze & Amiodarone

I had the 5 box procedure on 10/29/10.  At present, successful.  However a day surgery a defective sinoatrial node was revealed and corrected with a pacemaker.  I was started on Amiodarone, and discharged with instructions to continue the medication.  My condition improved for about 6 days, and then things started to go downhill.  By 14 days post op, I was essentially bedridden, unable to walk more than a minute  without sitting and resting.  My symptoms were bronchial /  lung congestion, nausea, and extreme fatigue.  I discontinued the Amiodarone on post op day 16.  I am now 29 days without Amiodarone - nausea is a little better, breathing a little deeper, but fatigue rules my life.  QUESTION:  Have any of you folks had Amiodarone adventures, and how did it resolve ?   Thanks

Hi Rick - I was sorry to read about your troubles post-surgery.  What was the reason for the defective sinoatrial node -- was it related to the surgical procedure?  Did you have to travel after leaving the hospital, and if so, was that difficult for you?  Please keep us posted on how you are feeling.  Best wishes, Sally (Husband hopes to have the Five Box in January)

I don't know the cause of the defective sinoatrial node.  I suspect it started going bad early this year, because after 10 years with afib with a fairly constant level of diminished capacity, I felt a new deterioration in my condition this spring.  This deterioration is what led me to start research, again, for the latest and greatest in cures.  ( In 2006, I went through 2 pulmonary vein ablation operations, without success)  Bottom line, I do not believe it was related to the 5 box maze.  I flew to Ohio from Calif and back -  10/29 5 box maze, 11/2 pacemaker install, 11/3 discharge & fly home.  I was weak, and advised not to carry anything heavier than 10 pounds, but otherwise, no problem.  Dr. Sirak has stayed in contact with me this entire time - very supportive.  If given the chance again, the only thing I'd change would be to look to alternatives to Amiodarone.  Read up on that drug - the down side is steep.
A side note - there is post op pain - generally well managed by oxycodone, but your chest does get a pretty good beating.  Good luck to you.
