Adrenaline serge wile lifting heavy weight

by Saildog, Jun 27, 2008 08:30PM
am a 53 year old male, active, usually hike 3 miles a day. I have been diagnosed with a panic disorder, and have experienced panic attacks and other typical symptoms of anxiety since 1980. I have had every test done (for the heart) several times over, and everything has always been negative except Pac's and some Pvc's once in a wile.  My present problem is that in the last couple of years, when I go to lift heavy weight, I seem to get suddenly jittery after lifting heavy weight, and my heart rate spikes and I get dizzy then I stop and it goes away. It does feel as if too much adrenaline is being put out by my body. I don't feel this when I hike. It seems to hit when I bend over and lift something, or try to pull on a boat line or something. (I live in a Marine) I do suffer from a hiatal hernia and IBS. I have had heart work ups and nothing ever showed up. ???Anyone???

Hey saildog,

I to have experienced panic attacks and anxiety so I know where your coming from.
The good thing is that your heat work ups are all clear so I'd say you have nothing to worry about.  As for your symptoms when you weight lift I think weight lifting uses different energy system than hiking, hiking is all aerobic while weight lifting is anaerobic, you may feel dizzy after lifting because maybe your not breathing enough during and after lifting heavy weights.  As for your heart rate rising this is a normal response to exercise because when you lift something your muscles suddenly need more oxygenated blood therefore your heart has to suddenly increase output by beating more.  Im guessing that the adrenaline feeling your getting is normal because your probably feeling pumped after lifting the heavy weights.  However if a stress test wasn't one of the heart work ups you had I recommend getting one since your dizziness comes on when you put strain on your heart and while your getting stress test from doctor you could also ask him bout the other things that concern you.

All the best.
