Afib and Pradaxa

Afib and Pradaxa

My father-in-law has suffered from Afib for some time.  He also has a leaky aortic valve.  He takes Warfarin.

I understand Pradaxa is not recommended for patients with valvular atrial fibrillation.  What is valvular Afib? Could he be a candidate if his Afib is not related to valve problem?

Thx

If you haven't already looked, you may find something or someone helpful at:

I did not read any of the references.

I don't know "valvular AFib" myself, but know in my case the mitral valve leaking may have put too much pressure back on my left atrium... and caused it to enlarge.  An enlarged left atrium can cause AFib.

My doctor/Cardiologist asked if I wanted to use the new anticoagulant (I didn't ask for the name but believe it is Pradaxa) instead of my long used warfarin.  Looking at the cost, I said not yet.  Besides, I'd prefer a few years of patient use on any medication before I use it.  I have taken at least one prescription in the past (I know of only one) that was removed from the market due to side-effects.
