I had one and it was no big deal to have put in. Had just a local anesthetic and really no pain afterwards. You carry a beeper like thingie and activate it when you feel something *different*. I went in every so often, like every three months and had it interrogated. I seldom activated it though. I think you only get 3 activations before it won't take any more. I've already forgotten! It really is about the size of a stick of gum because I just had mine taken out and asked to look at it. It does sound like you need one! Good luck.
