Anyone allergic to coumadin?

by Barb64, Jun 18, 2009 09:11PM
I have just been diagnosed with paroxsymal atrial fib and after a short course of coumadin discovered I am allergic to it.
What do you take? I have a family history - mother - two heart attacks - one at 52 and at 56 - a stroke at 76, one grandmother had two strokes and died at 50 with the second one, the other grandmother had one stroke and died of a heart attack. I really want to avoid a stroke!

I haven't heard of allergic reactions to Coumadin/Warfarin, but if you have it, then it must be the case.  Just be sure it is the Coumadin.  You have at least three strikes against you: age, AFib (even paroxsymal, with I understand to be occasional) and family history.  You really need more than aspirin, but if you're not taking any anticoagulant or aspirin, I think it a good idea to take aspirin if your stomach can take it..take the aspirin with a meal, and if that's all you are taking for stroke mitigation then a full strength aspirin seems appropriate (325 mg, as I recall).
