Are we relying too much on machines for an accurate vital reading??

by CDQ81, Aug 27, 2008 07:12PM

Could it be possible that we are relying
on machines a little too much?

Expecting an accurate reading of our Heart Rate
or Blood Pressure.  I've always trusted someone
taking a reading manually.  There is no way a machine
could take the place of a functioning human being.

Typically the Techs, or Nurses rely on these machines
for vital readings. Although most doctors take the readings manually.
Its just good medicine practice for them, and they also
know that these machines could cause an inaccurate readings.

These machines could possibly have a glitch, and the next thing
we know....The next 20 readings from patients are all in accurate.
And these machines aren't re-calibrated or checked till god know's when?

An accurate vital reading is extremely crucial, especially with patients
that have blood pressure, or heart problems.

Especially on patients that are under weight, or over weight.
These machines could give a false or inaccurate reading due to
the way the cuff is positioned.

I trust my heart rate and blood pressure being taken manually!
It may take much longer for the techs, nurses, or doctors to get
a reading.  Although, it would at least be much more accurate!!!

I have one of those wrist cuff blood pressure "machines". My EP suggested I buy one to check my heart rate when I was in a-fib or a-flutter. Before I used it, my EP asked me to bring it in and she wanted to check it out to make sure it was as accurate as it could be.She also told me that when I was in my "rapid" a-fib/fluuter attack that the h/r was most likely not accurate due to the fact that these "machines" are usually not capable of recording h/r over 200 accurately. When I have an appointment to see my EP, the nurse always checks my blood pressure with the machine, however, once my EP comes in she always rechecks my blood pressure manually.

Machines are great.  Although, in my personal opinion....

Manually checking heart rate & blood pressure
is always a safe way to go.

Being accurate is very important!

Especially when your health is involved!!!
