Atrial Fibrillation and Ex-Maze Procedure

Atrial Fibrillation and Ex-Maze Procedure

I am a 60 year old male with atrial fibrillation being successfully treated after conversion with flecinade, coudamin, and a pacemaker/AICD. Other than the atrial fibrillation (130BMPs) I have had no events. My arteries were checked with a catheter and they are clear.

I don't want to be on flecinade or coudamin and would like to eliminate the pacemaker/AICD. My resting heart rate without the pacemaker is 52 to 54 which has been normal for me. When on amiodarone and beta blockers prior to my conversion, my resting heart rate went as low as 34 BMP. I believe my cardiologists placed the pacemaker because of the low heart rate. My ejection factor was in the 20s during the AF and has returned to the low 60s now.

Is the new Ex-Maze procedure recently developed a possible treatment for me?

I don't know what the Ex-Maze procedure is, but can say I had the open heart Maze procedure done when I had open heart surgery to repair my Mitral valve.  I was in sinus for about 30 days, then went back int AFib.  My cardiologist said my surgeon most likely did the "short" Maze, the longer, more labor intensive Maze is more effective.  I don't know what to make of that, but that Maze procedure didn't work for me.

Following an electrocardioversion on August 29, I am still in Sinus, but have a rather high heart rate, about 100 at physical rest.  The HR doesn't go up much either when I do light work, suggesting my heart is running faster than needed when I am at rest.  More on this if I can get an answer next week when I try to contact my cardiologist.
