Be Careful Out There

Not really a question, but more of a warning, there are some indivduals on this sight that shoot their mouths off and they now absolutely nothing.  So please don't take everything they say as gospel, get good medical care, have faith and live every single day to the fullest!

I can say I did have one pcp that was great; he's the one who found my problem last year when I went in for a broken foot that didn't heal.  I saw him for 6 months, I called to set my next appt and found he left the clinic and they don't know where he went.  I did a search and can't find him anywhere so I'm thinking he moved out of state.

Not all doctors are created equal most of them push pills, don't listen, dont think outside the box and only treat symptoms. I totally agree and am thank full for forums like these. I also dont understand why
some doctors get so mad at the fact that i do my own research on the internet it drives them nuts. Just have faith and never settle until you find the right doctor. Just because there MDs does not mean that they are right. I must add that i think i finally found that doctor.

the dry humor part about Is_something_wrong diagnosing me - he's helped me alot understand some of the medical mumbo jumbo - sometimes I think I should be paying the community instead of my doctors =)

everyone laughs when I tell them this well known cardiologist told me about quacking like a duck; so I call my dr's my quacks :p  I was shocked at first and a bit angry because my insurance had just shelled out $150,000 to their office and that was their answer when I asked about the test results...now I just laugh at it.

Oh the anxiety card - that's a pet peeve of mine too, just boils my blood when I hear that excuse dr's use for patients when they don't know or understand what's wrong - like a catch all phrase for [I dunno] everything...

You sound alot like me; read my journal about my journey sometime - I have quite a few stories over the past 10 -15 years where dr's did the same thing to me; in 1996 I lost a child and almost died from a blood infection that turned septic, because a doctor didn't listen to me; in 2007 my pcp I trusted, omitted my EKG from me and didn't tell me anything was wrong because I wasn't banging his door down when I had thousands of pvc's.

The point of my long winded posts are this - we each know our bodies best and know what's going on inside - what feels normal what doesn't; so no matter what anyone says; doctors included, if you think something's wrong with you; keep pushing until you find the answers.

One day, I'm sure I'll find a doctor I can trust again but until then, I'll still be bugging everyone here :P

I must be a little slow or something, because I didnt see the humor part. I have had TERRIBLE times with doctors, and yes there are good ones out there. I have a FANTASTIC one now, although he doesnt appear to know that much outside the standard stuff, BUT he admits it when he does not know and he tries to find out, and he is really is very caring. I could tell you three very bad doctor stories with me, but I dont want anyone to be bored to suicide, so alas I will share this ONE story. FIrst a HUGE pet peeve I have is when doctors dont know what you have, so they call it anxiety. Seriously I do have anxiety, but you see, I KNOW when its anxiety or NOT. Ok, so I was pregnant with my second baby and throwing up all the time--(hope noones eating) went to the doctor who says " morning sickness is due to anxiety, go back on your prozac". (no I did not)  The vomiting continued--more intense than with my first baby. Well, I developed a throbbing back pain. Went to the dr. who did the usual tests and said "no fever, negative test--its anxiety" I went home, the pain got worse and worse. The pain became INTENSE and the vomiting SEVERE. Soon I was so dehydrated and weak and could not get out of bed. Husband takes me to the hospital and tell them they will admit me, and not just see me as an out patient and they better not say its anxiety. (oh dont you just like a strong protective male?)  They reluctantly admit me after a call to my doctor (the one that said it was anxiety), another UTI test and temp. etc...and this doctor comes in and says "your just dehydrated, nothings wrong" I told him I couldnt take the pulsating in my back, and he said "its just anxiety, you are fine, but we will let you stay the night"
A WONDERFUL nurse comes in and I am telling her Im in PAIN. She gave me something to stop the vomiting, and I have an IV for fluids, and I tell her, listen, this is not anxiety and she says "I know, I am finding someone that will listen to you" She did, another doctor came in after the other left (not sure if it was a shift change or not) but anyway, I told him, I said "I dont get fevers. He asked me about the pain, and said lets do an ultrasound on her kidneys----TA-DAH! We have ourselves a real doctor! Bleeding/infection---went on antibiotics, got better! :) So we bought medical books, and guess what----under vomiting was a questionair and It asked things like do you have a throbbing pain in this part of your back---if yes---see kidney infection! Over the years I have tried to explain to doctors that I dont get fevers, etc... and they often do not listen. My doctor that I have now actually listens. In fact he said he will admit my body does not respond the as the majority. Oh, and for the record, I dont run to doctors at all. Ask my doctor--he had to see me due to my heart issues and he was not happy that I dont get checkups etc... I VERY rarely go, but the times I did I was always offered antidepressants because they can not think outside the box---and one of those times, had I not listened to my body, and found a doctor willing to listen, I literally would be dead---for real---again, I am not doctor bashing, I am however not the same little insecure girl I once was that was bullied by pill pushing doctors insisting every thing was anxiety. If something is wrong with me, I research, so I have an idea of what it may be, and I will hire a doctor that will listen and try to help. I dont expect perfection, just a caring doctor, and if they are your basic run of the mill antidepressant pimp, I will surely fire that baby quickly. oooh, reliving those nightmares makes me mad! Better go eat some  chocolate. lol

disclaimer:  this is a joke about my dry sense of humor and what we go through as patients with doctors and why I read forums looking for help and trying to help others...

"Well, I think my most important "job" here is to interpret what doctors tell you. I don't think all doctors are good enough explaining their patient what their diseases are and aren't."

Dear Is_something_wrong; can you please help me interpret this?

A patient walks into their doctor's office for a post surgery checkup; and to find out the results of a test.  The patient asks the doctor what the test results said, the doctor's response is "inconclusive", but if it walks and quacks like a duck we call it a duck.

yes this really happened to me - and part of the reason I am still on this forum - my doctor's with 20+ years of experience each and fancy degrees hanging on the wall cannot tell me what's wrong; it MAY be this or that - yet they treat only symptoms and don't dig to find out what it is...that's all I want is a diagnosis and 4 cardiologists, 2 ep's and 2 pcp's can't tell me a darn thing other than it "may" be ARVD, HCM or we don't know...oh I'm sorry I don't know what's causing your heart to stop or those malignant heart arrythmia's - you're kidding right? there has to be a reason?

when a doctor with 20+ years experience tells a patient things I've been told; or that a doctor is not a magician and can't cure me and treats only symptoms instead of finding out what is wrong, it irritates me - doctor's are not gods, they're human beings who make mistakes; misdiagnose people; brush things under the rug, and overlook things - most doctors have no clue what we go through as patients unless they've experienced the exact things themselves

I went for years with doctors telling me "nothing" was wrong.   I trusted them and listened like a good little patient and ignored my symptoms and I almost died because of it - yes I know I'm not the regular run of the mill patient, but I lost my faith in doctors 15 months ago and don't wish anyone else to go through what I've gone through.

The ones who no longer post probably found a solution for their health problems or were cured by surgery and out living their lives, while some of us here are still searching for answers which we probably wouldn't have if doctors would do their job and take the time to explain things to patients.

disclaimer: this isn't meant to offend anyone; just the cold hard truth about the doctor's I've encountered - 1 of which is head of a large university in central Florida; another is head of cardiology at a heart center.

Jenny you are so funny!!!!   Itdood i thought that was a great explanation on the site and how its used.  It just felt really right with what you wrote about members trying to fill in the gaps for others.  I know a few years ago when i was having a tough time of it a couple of members set me straight on what they had gone thru and what their docs said and i took it straight to my heart doc who is not a big talker with a list of questions...problem solved...i believe i know Shae and she is a great and caring person and very sensitive to others and that is probably where that came from and i doubt was directed at anyone in particular..but Shae is a big girl and can speak for herself i am sure....she too is facing issues w. her heart like the majority of us are on one level or another and we know what that can do to each and every one of us...

Is there any indication that the first poster was referring to anyone in particular?

She hasn't come back with more comments, so maybe posting here was an accident.  In any case, without reference to a specific post, and in the presence of so many messages expressing satisfaction (as well as general awareness that this board is not a substitute for genuine medical care), it seems a bit like a tempest in a teapot to me.

Hi.

Well, I think my most important "job" here is to interpret what doctors tell you. I don't think all doctors are good enough explaining their patient what their diseases are and aren't.

I ALWAYS tell people to ask their doctor. I refuse to interpret EKG's, to comment medication dosages, and I refuse to say "that is your diagnosis" because that's something a doctor should do.

But I disagree at some points with you. There is not harmful to explain symptoms, or to explain what the different diseases are. And I think it's OK to suggest anxiety and adrenaline surges in the most obvious cases. But a doctor should have the last word.

There was a recent one about "Can I cut off my beta blocker before surgery?"

NOBODY here can answer that at all in any way shape or form.
First: we're not MD's. Second: even if we were docs, we don't know you...  your history... so it's a math problem without all the variables.

I suppose the underlying question was: "My doc told me to cut off, and I heard that you're supposed to taper off... anybody else here go off cold turkey?"

For the people engaged in the conversation, I suppose that's understood. What about lurkers to a stale conversation? Dunno... Lots of people don't understand their doc (big words, fast talker...). So, I precieve some second guessing on the forum - that, to me is worrysome.

Doctors cannot provide you with personal experiences. There is a good chance they have never felt the things we feel. I greatly appreciate all the personal insight, comments and heartfelt support from everyone on this site. Personally,  I never felt that anyone was shooting their mouth off. I don't feel alone in my condition thanks to everyone here. I think it goes without saying that your doctor should be the first stop for all your questions.

Everyone here, especially the regulars, always give some some advise and sign off that they should see a doctor.   We're all adults here, we can disseminate information.

As for littlegreenman1's comment, questions get asked on here that make you wonder why didn't they pick up the phone and ask their doc?   Things like "my EKG says abnormal, is that bad?"  and we're like, ummmmm, OK, pick up the phone and ask your doc!!!!

A lot of misunderstandings occur between patient and doc.  Almost always this is the result of poor communication.  Almost always the poor communication is on the part of the practitioner, but it takes two to tango.  Yes they are busy, yes they have more urgent matters to deal with.

I feel that gap will always exist and that's why this board continues to grow and thrive.  There's a need there, a gap, and this board helps fill that communication gap.

All you regulars, keep doing what you do!!   Your diversity, your uniqueness in how you answer is our strength.

It's not easy to read other people's symptoms on a daily basis and help them.  What you do is charity.   It's mercy to someone who is suffering.  Always remember that the roots of modern day health care are tied to the idea of offering mercy.  I don't mean this in the religious sense at all, mercy means "compassionate treatment of those in distress".

I understand what you are saying littlegreenman1, but I feel like most of us are adults asking other adults for their opinions and experiences, and we KNOW no one is a doctor--if we want to ask a doctor, we would go see our doctor or post on the ask a doctor site for a fee. I agree its not wise for one to ask others opinions expecting they are doctors, but I cant imagine anyone is asking a public question thinking doctors are just sitting here answering questions for free. In fact, even the doctors on here say they can not diagnose anyone. I just hate to see people get all (regulating) because we all are entitled to ask for others  (opinions) on here. The way everything is being regulated now adays, pretty soon it will be illegal for us to ask our neighbor for his opinion on whats wrong with our car, because after all, they arent licensed mechanics. I believe we need to be allowed to think for ourselves. I have learned from experience that just because someone has a "degree" or a "license" does not mean they know more.:)

I kinda agree...

This forum can be useful for "How did that work for you?"  "How was the recovery for you?"

But I see a heck of a lot of questions that should be asked to MD's.  "What's happening to me?" - meh...

we're a community support forum; sometimes the expert questions get kicked over to this forum and some new members may not know that...the majority of us have no medical background, just live and learn as patients and try to help and support others

having said that - always seek the advice of a physician; and my jaded biased history says get 2 or 3 or 10 opinions from doctors lol they are human, make mistakes and overlook things as well as brush things under the rug they shouldn't BUT they do have medical degrees :P

I have gotten more help in 15 months on MH and skipping hearts forums than 9 doctors combined and I can't thank the members here enough for helping me and holding my hand through everything I've been through =)

Perhaps you have the wrong board?  I noticed in your public profile that you only posted here in Heart Rhythm once before and that thread looked positive/helpful.

The heart rhythm board has many wonderful people, great experience and great knowledge.  I'm very proud of our interactions.  I think the CL's do a great job of managing the board, not that I'm biased or anything :-)

I haven't seen anyone "shoot off their mouths."  And mostly I think we like to hear information about things from the patient's point of view. How does an ablation feel? How do you get answers from your doctor? How do the heart meds affect you?  I think that's always helpful.
