I too have experienced heart arrhythmia more frequently after eating dark chocolate. The ironic thing is I was eating chocolate because everywhere I read that it is good for the heart, but in my anecdotal experience that is not the case. I too plan to switch to carob. Thank you to the OP and others for sharing their experiences and raising awareness.
I haven't had any chocolate since December 2010 and only one episode of Afib. I have given up chocolate, and any kind of coffee. I do use carob powder to make a hot "chocolate" drink and wonder if one might use it like cocoa for brownies, etc.? I don't drink carbonated drinks. So, I'm down to water and herbal tea, which is ok, you get used to it. It's a good trade off when you consider the alternative might be hospitalization and electroconversion. I do not want to go there again if I can prevent it.
Alas, I have fewer pleasures in my life because of pvcs. I no longer eat dark chocolate, sugar, or have coffee - regular OR decaf. I have even stopped my occasional martini. Hate these things, they are ruining my life!
Choclate does seem to increase my pvc's so I do not eat it. Also I am starting to think that too much sugar (i.e. hard candy or caffeine free soft drinks) can increase pvc's so I am staying away from these currently. Jury is still out on this latest (as my wife calls them) :"jimbo theory".
I love dark chocolate and eat it, almost every day. But I have to limit the amount. I cannot eat a whole candy bar or my heart will get excited. LOL But I can eat a Dove Promise for example. Just one. If I eat 3 or 4, I'll pay the price with a jittery heart. Not sure what's causing it but I know I don't want it.
Sad but true, for many chocolate..can increase palpitations.
Everyone is different though..but I too have experienced increase after eating chocolate.
