Defenitly magnesium helps with PVC

Hi,

Yesterday my cousin passed away. 6 weeks ago she was diagnosed with cancer.  I am very sad and very anxious. I have an anxiety disorder since 2004. I do not like funerals and I do not know if  can get through this. The funeral will take place this saturday.

In may 2009 I was diagnosed with mild MVP with mild MR. The Holter test showed 187 PVC, 22 couplets, 2 episodes of VT and 31 PACS. The cardiologist put me on a beta blocker, Nebivolol (Bystolic), 2.5 mg daily for the tachycardia. Since taking the med I noticed that I was getting more PVC's than usual. I read in this forum about Magnesium for PVC's. I wanted to test Magnesium Taurate but it is not available where I live (but I orederd it from amazon.com). I decided to start with Magnesium Oxide about 6 weeks ago. I noticed that the manesium is really helping me because I noticed that I was getting fewer PVC's or I was PVC free.

As I mentioned above; yesterday was a crazy day and I forgot to take my magnesium. I noticed today that I got more PVC's tha usual and I am very anxious with this funeral thing.

Can somebody reassure me that evrything is going to be OK and I can get through the funeral?

Thanks,

Amethyst

I've been having pvc's for the last 6 mths just in past month they have decreased but have not gone away, I had a echocardiogram that wasn't bad it show a little leakage in a valve, my ekg showed 1 degree and some 2nd degree block which my doctor thought my medication may be causing, I also had a 48hr holter monitor that showed 117 ectopic(pvc) beats and I think 3 svt beats, however My Dr. did recommend I take a mag supplement but I wasn't aware that there would be a differnce between gluconate and oxide? I'm going to try the mag supplement and see if it decreases my pvc's to maybe none......

Hi Jerry,

You are totaIly right. You can not take too much magnesium oxide because it is poorly absorbed. If you are taking a multivitamin-mineral supplement, remember to check the amount of elemental magnesium on the label and count it in your daily total.

If you develop loose stools while taking magnesium, it does not necessarily mean you are absorbing enough and losing the rest; it may mean you are taking to much at one time. NEVER TAKE YOUR DAILY MAGNESIUM ALL AT ONCE. Spread it out through the day; four times a day is best if you have been experiencing diarrhea. If that does not do the trick, you probably need to cut back the amount you are taking or switch to another type or brand of magnesium.

Chelated magnesium is far better absorbed than magnesium oxide but is more expensive. Complementary medicine practitioners rely on chelated magnesium, such as magnesium glycinate, taurate and oratate  (magnesium plus amino acids) to treat serious cases of magnesium deficiency. These kind of magnesiums have less laxative effect on the intestines than magnesium citrate, so they are recomended if you tend to have loose stools.

Take your first dose of magnesium when you wake up in the morning and the last dose at bedtime. Magnesium is most deficient in the early morning and late afternoon. Most people find magnesium as good as a sleepin pill to help them get a good night’s rest.

Succes,

Lissette

Thanks for taking the time to share you study and results.

It did seem to me that one of the benefits of the oxide form, which is what I purchased, is it would be very hard to take too much as it is so poorly absorbed.   I was taking one 400 mg tablet per day, and if I add it back tonight I will not have a break in taking the supplement.  I reloaded my "pill dispenser" last night, absent the magnesium supplements.  I will add it back in.   My multi-vitamin also has a low-dose magnesium component.

my understanding has been the same as what Lissette is saying: that serum Mg levels are not very informative. A better test would be the Mg levels contained in red blood cells.

Hi again,

I did a complete bloodwork in may 2009 and my magnesium was fine too like yours. What I want to ilustrate is that if the magnesium in your blood is good that does not necessarily mean that it is good in your whole body. Maybe there is a magnesium deficiency for instance in a muscle like your heart.

Some kind of magnesium will take months of oral suplemantation before restoring intaracelular levels.

My advice will be to give it a try.

Sorry I want to correct myself in these last 7 days I have gotten some (more) PVC because I was so stressed with the death of my cousin that I forgot to take my supplement. Today is a PVC free day :) With all the funeral, with all the stress but it was a good day because I took my magnesium.

Hi,

Before stopping your supplement pls read this.
About 60-65 percent of all our magnesium is housed in our bones and teeth. The remaining 35-40 percent is found in the rest of the body, including muscle and tissue cells and body fluids. The highest concentrations are in the heart and brain cells, so it is no wonder that the major symptoms of magnesium deficiency affect the heart and the brain. These are also the two organs that have considerable electrical activity, measured by EKG and EEG. Our blood contains only 1 percent of the body total magnesium.

Whick kind of magnesium are you taking?

Magnesium oxide appears to have high amount of elemental magnesium. One 500 mg capsule of magnesium oxide contains 300 mg of elemental magnesium. But little of that amount is avaialable to the body because it is not absorbed and therefore not biologically avaialable.  One recent study reported 4 percent absorption rate of magnesium oxide. This means 12 mg of 500 mg capsule are absorbed and 288 may stay in the intestines, acting like a laxative. Imagine how much favorable the result would be if a more absorbable form of magnesium were used.

The safety of magnesium supplements
For the average person, oral magnesium, even in high dosages, has no side effects except loose stools, whichs is a mechanism to release excess magnesium and an indication to cut back. Excess magnesium is also lost through the urine.

I am currently taking magnesium oxide 250 mg two times a day for the last 7 weeks. Although it is poorly absorbed I noticed improvement with the PVC's. I do not get the PVC so much a day (maybe one or two), some days I am PVC free or if I get a PVC it is a mild one. I do not want to jinx myself but I didn't felt a PVC for the last seven days.

A RNRita encouraged me to buy a supplemental magnesium from Spring Valley.  Not the best form, but I figured I'd give it a try.. going on two week

I then came across my last blood test and I find the it was checked for magnesium and reads:  2.1 meq/l (I don't know that unit of measure) with a Reference Range of 1.2 to 2.5, so I was in the upper end of the range.  This suggests to me that I don't need a supplement and in fact suggests that a supplement may push me over the reference range.  Magnesium, like all components are not good if taken to an overdose level, I believe.  I think I will stop taking the supplement on Sunday, the first day of my pill tracker/dispenser.

I have not noticed any bad side effects or any AFib symptom deduction.

I what you are going through, since 1992, I have been to more funerals then one person should have to.  I have lost all my grandparent, aunts, uncles cousins, friends, you name it.  But I always try to think of how they are in a better place and feeeling no pain, and that they are watching over me.

But the one think I always take with me is a poem called "Foot Prints in the Sand"  my Grandma gave me a copy of the poem when I was a child, and I take it with to all events, good or bad.  THis poem has brought me such peace that when ever I find a copy, wether it is painted on something or on a wall haning I by it.  If I can fnd it on a cross, even better.  I have about 13 copies hanging in my house now. And One dinner place mat with the poem on it.
Things will go will for you, just have faith.

Hi jsuter,

Thanks for your kind words. I am so sorry for your husband passing away. You discribed so well my own fears.
I have been trough so many things in my life. My father died 12 years ago. I was 23 at that time. And after that every year till 2003 his brothers passed away. So every year was a funeral. And now my cousin (42).

Once again thanks for your words and prayers. I will pray to God every step of the way. I know he will help because he already did so much for me. If it wasn't for him I was not here writing this comment.

Thanks,
Lissette

I totally understand your fears and concerns with this funeral on Saturday, I'm the same way! I tend to have anxiety attacks during funerals, I think it's because I feel like I'm facing my own mortality and I use to get this same exact feeling when I was in a movie theater, or at an event where I was stuck in the middle of a crowd of people, I was scared that my heart palps would start and nobody could help me or I'd be to embarrassed to tell anybody something was wrong or that I'd die during the attended event....I'm doing a little better, my husband died 2 yrs ago, I was so worried about attending his funeral, I just knew that I would start having these stupid heart palps, you know all the skipping, pausing, fluttering, just everything that goes along with it, including the panic/anxiety attacks....but a few hours before, I prayed, I prayed that God would give me the strength and courage that I needed to fulfil my duty  that day as a wife of a "fallen" USA soldier...and you know what? I did it, I was okay, I mean the pain was there but as far as my heart messing with me...didn't happen, and when they handed me his flag, I thought I would lose it, I didn't, I went there to do a job, and I wasn't going to let "him" down...I wanted "him" to be proud of me....just as much as I was proud of him...I owed him that much!
I guess what I'm trying to say is....you CAN do this, you just have to come to grips with what you are about to face, you ARE going to be okay, funerals are tough but they are more like a celebration of that persons life, don't think of it as an ending of lifes journey but more like a spiritual beginning, an everlasting journey into Gods heavenly gates, where they will meet their savior!
You will be fine! I'll pray for your strength, just stay calm and relaxed....it's going to be alright!
All My Prayers!
Julie
