Hi, I have been following posts on this board for several years. It has given me an amazing amount of comfort with my crazy heart.
I am curious if anyone here has gotten an H1N1 vaccine yet and has had any cardiac/arrhythmia symptoms that seem to be related to getting the shot.
I am scheduled to get the shot this afternoon(I qualify due to a preexisting condition) and I'm a little nervous becauser the seasonal shot always increases my symptoms for a day or so. I have been going through a bad palpitaion/arrhythmia time lately - I'm wearing an event monitor right now and I am getting lots of great recordings. :).
I'm just starting to question if I should go through with the shot. I imagine that any flu I get would make my heart symptoms a lot worse than the shot would...but I can't help but feel a little anxious about getting the shot.
Even though I probably qualify for getting the flu shot each year, I generally don't. I do have a goofy heart and asthma but my immune system is terrific. Haven't had the flu in over 36 years.
As for the shot being dangerous, I'm not sure how it could be since it's generally made from a dead virus (exception being the nasal spray which they would not use on my pregnant daughter). If you're allergic to eggs, it's not a good idea to get the shot either. I just don't see how something dead can hurt you. People may feel a bit of tenderness in the arm or feel a little off while their body does its job of boosting the immune system against the disease.
I had the seasonal flu shot in September. No side effects (and I have lots of PVCs). My daughter had confirmed h1n1 via test in early November. She slept in our bed for 4 nights. It was a mild flu as far as flu goes. My wife and I both had very mild flu like symptoms but it never went into a full flu. We only had the aches and fatigue, no fever or cough. Not sure if the seasonal shot I got offered some protection or I may have had h1n1 before.
I'm a believer in vaccines. I've never once seen good info from the anti - vaccine crowd other than anecdotal evidence. The h1n1 vaccine has been delivered to millions of people and I've not read squat (anecdotal or confirmed) about it having any confirmed negative effects, let alone statistically significant trends.
Flu, wether seasonal of novel strains like h1n1, can be a hard trip with pre-existing lung issues. Talk to your doctor about your concerns.
