Diver and Mitral Valve Prolapse

Diver and Mitral Valve Prolapse

I am a certfied diver that has MVP(Mitral Valave Prolaspe).  Symptoms that usually occur for me are numbenss, tinlgness, palipations and irregular heart beat, light headed.

I went on 3 dive trips the second two dive trips I took meclizine or dramamine fro motion sickness which didnt help anyway.  After the second day of diving on my second & 3rd trip, I went home. Several hours later (5-8) I started getting shortness of breath, feeling of heart palipatations and the next day I had chest tightness. This gradually gest worst and than gets better by the third day. This never happened after my first trip of diving whihch I never took any motion sick meds for that trip either.   I run and work out regularly and this never happens. so mi thinking it may be the meds. Has anybody heard anything like this? Or risks of diving with MVP? I already been checked for decomplression sickness and thats not what the docs beleieve it is. I plan on seeing a cardiologist next month. I am just hear for any thoughts? I really love scuba diving and hate to give it up.

The answer seems to be there are not many divers with MVP reading posts on this Community.

Clearly it would be a good idea to discuss with your doctor...but it is my thinking that for "normal" scuba (not experimental, or extreme) diving MPV should not be a problem.  Many who suffer from MVP don't even know they have the condition.

However, given your symptom level it would seem prudent to not "push" yourself to the extent the "light headed" condition doesn't threaten to make you pass out.  If that's seems a possibility, then I'd suggest diving and even driving would require special precautions.
