EP study complications?!?!

EP study complications?!?!

Im a 24yr old male, Im going tomorrow morning for an EP study  and possible ablation for my v-tach episode, a 27 beat run at 127bpm.  non sustained.  Im sooooooooooo scared of complications, does anyone know the death rate during this test? or any other complications? if they induce v-fib whats the chances they can get you back into normal rythm? is this a VERY safe procedure that they want to do for my v-tach?  please HELP!!!!

There are complications in about one out of five hundred cases. Those are usually not deadly.

Let's put it this way: If they induce V-fib you should be REALLY happy you did the test, because if so, something serious would be wrong and I really doubt it is. Chance a VF is converted if using defib after only a second or two is close to 100%. But chances they induce VF is close to 0%. You are safe!!

I've answered all your other questions in detail in other posts.

Good luck. I hope you'll get reassured after this. You really deserve a good life after all this cardiac neurosis you've gone through.

Keep us posted.

Minor complications include minor bleeding at the site of catheter insertion, temporary heart rhythm disturbances caused by the catheter irritating the heart muscle and temporary changes in blood pressure.

More significant complications, are quite rare, and given your level of anxiety, I think it's best not to even venture there. The risk of dying during an EP study is less than 1 out of 1,000. You will be in a controlled environment where they will be ready to deal with whatever comes their way. I highly doubt that they would try to induce VF and the chances of you going into it are slim to none.

If it helps you to feel a little less anxious with the impending study...I've lived through sustained VT at a rate as high as 250 for 10 minutes. I've been through 5 EP Studies with 4 ablations....the best part, is that I am still here, and none of the horrible things that you're thinking could happen, happend to me. You being half my age give or take a few years and having no known heart defects or disease should sail through tomorrow with flying colors! Best of luck to you! :)
