Ectopic Heart Beat

Ectopic Heart Beat

Hello, for approximately two years, I have been having Ectopic Heart Beats. They are rather seldom, and cause no other symptoms. I have had several tests done: ECG, 48 Heart Monitor, blood work, and everything seems to be normal. My FP told me that considering the nature of the irregular heart beat, and the fact that it only happens when I am at rest, suggests that the irregularity is harmless. Lately however, I've been experiencing the ectopics during times when I'm overly exerting myself (Eg. prolonged running). Are the ectopics harmful, or something I should see my FP about again, now that they are happening when I am physically active?

Also, I have a question regarding my resting and working heart rate. I am someone who is extremely active and fit. I excercise 5 days a week, everyweek. I was shocked to find the other day, that my resting heart rate is at 85-90BPM. My max heart rate is 200, according to common calculations, but while I was jogging steadily for 40 minutes, my heart rate was sky rocketing to 170 BPM. These numbers seem very high to me. Is there a reason why my resting and working heartrate would be so high, considering my fitness level? I don't drink caffiene, smoke or drink alchohol.

Jogging's an excellent exercise, one that could easily raise a person's HR to 170 - even a person who's very fit.  From Lance Armstrong's own website, his resting HR is in the low 30's and his max HR is 201.

As for your resting HR - I've seen doctors in many places tell people to not get too excited if their resting HR falls a bit outside of the 60-80bpm "normal" parameter.  Mine is 55-65 at rest which technically makes me bradycardic, but not a single doctor has made mention of it.

You could be stressed, which is an easy way to have your resting HR rise 5-10 points.  If you have a Polar heart monitor, strap it on while you're sitting around watching TV and see where your rate goes.

That stress could also be the reason for the ectopics during exercise.  Unless they're coming frequently, odds are that they're not much more than a nuisance.  For awhile I would get them in a specific HR range during exercise - on my way up to full exertion and on the way down, too - in the 110's bpm range.

How many are you having, and at what point in your exercise are they happening?
