Exercising Rate?

Exercising Rate?

Hey guys, I've recently decided that I really need to get into shape, so I've taken to running on an elliptical. I noticed today that my heart rate (on the built-in monitor of the machine) was 190 BPM. I must have kept it here for about 4 out of the 7 minutes of my run.

My question is, is this ok? Should I slow down, even if I'm trying to work on upping my stamina and speed? I'm only 17 so my heart can take it fine, can't it?

220-(your age) is considered your maximum heart rate, and your target rate should be 55-80% of that (I think - Google target heart rate) - though hitting your max rate during a seven minute workout is probably not optimal - it's better if you can work up to that.
