Extremely consistant heart rate

Extremely consistant heart rate

I am a 37 year old female and have suffered from chronic pancreatitis, however, my question is in reference to my heart.  In my many trips to the ER throughout the past several years I have had a consitant high heart rate of anywhere from 150-190bpm.  I am currently take Toporol to control the rate, which it does very well, however, if I am unable to keep my medications down due to naseua then I have been told to go to the ER if not for the naseau and pain from pancreatitis than for my high heart rate when I cant keep my Toporol down.  I am not physically bothered by the high and I dont suffer from disiness or any other symptoms.  I have had a stress test down and dostors have given my heart heart a clean bill of health.  They just call it Tachycardia.  My question is that in my frequent visits to the ER for naseau and abdominal (Pancreas pain) my doctors are worried most about my heart.  They ask why am I tachycardic?  Have my doctors given it a name?  I answer that my sister, nephew and mother have the same rapid rate, not quite as high as mine, but still in the 150s.    Should I be happy that my Toporol controls my rate as long as I take it daily or should I venture out and get these questions answered? Should I go beyond my cardaiologist and find the reason for this constant, consistately high heart rate?  Thanks   Jenny

From what you said I assume you do not have any irregularity in the rhythm, the HR is just oo high.  I do believe a HR over 130 does require mediation to slow it down, and a beta blocker (toprol, or the lower cost generic Metoprolol) usually helps lower the HR and the Blood Pressure (BP).  It appears you BP isn't lowered too much, i.e., no dizziness.

I think there is no answer to what caused your or your family's tachycardia.  If the beta blocker controls you HR and has no troubling side effects it seems to be your answer.

I take Metoprolol to control my high HR driven by Atrial Fibrillation.  This is a condition different that "simple" tachycardia and I have to take medication to also reduce the formation of blood clots due to the AFib.
