This patient support community is for discussions relating to heart rhythm issues, arrhythmia, irregular heartbeat, implanted defibrillators, pacemakers, and tachycardia.
From what you said I assume you do not have any irregularity in the rhythm, the HR is just oo high. I do believe a HR over 130 does require mediation to slow it down, and a beta blocker (toprol, or the lower cost generic Metoprolol) usually helps lower the HR and the Blood Pressure (BP). It appears you BP isn't lowered too much, i.e., no dizziness.
I think there is no answer to what caused your or your family's tachycardia. If the beta blocker controls you HR and has no troubling side effects it seems to be your answer.
I take Metoprolol to control my high HR driven by Atrial Fibrillation. This is a condition different that "simple" tachycardia and I have to take medication to also reduce the formation of blood clots due to the AFib.
