High heart rate

High heart rate

My resting heart rate will go up to between 95 - 115 for 1-2 months and then back down to normal range 70-80 for a few months.  This cycle has been going on for 20 years.  I don't have any depression and/or anxious thoughts etc.  I always felt the heart rate increase but just thought it was normal since that its been going on so long and my blood pressure is almost always fairly normal (120/80 - 130/90 range).  I had never measured my heart rate over a period of time until recently getting a heart rate and blood pressure monitor at home for my dad.  It was always just measured at doctors office and if it was high they called it anxiety and if low all was good since blood pressure was ok.  After keeping track of the heart rate each day and seeing the cycle it goes through I realize something may be wrong.

Can this be a heart issue or does it sound like garden variety anxiety?

I have an appt with dr in a week and was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on this forum.

thanks

do you check it at the same time every day?

You heart rate can go up for a while after a meal.

I check it always at rest and at 3 different times a day to see the pattern (usually morning, noon, night).  When resting heart rate is high (> 100) it is high all day long.  When it is in the normal range (70-80) it is normal all day long.

Given the HR is maintained for long periods of time I will guess the lower rate is normal and something happens to trigger the high rate:  look for a pattern of stress, food/drink, physical and emotional environments and the differences if you can identify any.

Thanks for responses......

I went to doctor and my resting heart rate was approximately 105-110 (at home and in his office).  I was prescribed Toprol XL (Metoprolol Succinate).  A few hours after taking first pill it went down to the 70's and has stayed there.  Will see a endocronologist and cardiologist to try and find out what causes it to be high.  Doctor does not think its anxiety and neither do I.  In the past (just to see what would happen) I tried taking Xanax to see if it lowered my resting heart rate when its high and it had no effect.

I have been diagnosed with a form of dysautonomia (malfunction of the autonomic nervous system).  I realized (after years of trying to figure out what was causing this) that strenuous exercise causes me to have bad symptoms (high heart rate and or bp, hot flashes, brain fog).  Treatment is really just managing symptoms.  Moderate exercise, healthy diet, SSRI's can help balance the autonomic nervous system.
