Irregular heart beat

I am 52 and have been having "fluttering, extra beats and skipped beats" for about 20 years. I've had every heart test possible and passed them all. I recently had a loop recorder implanted in my chest to monitor my heart beat. The doctor put me on 40mg sotalol twice a day about a month ago. It really doesn't seem to be working. Last week, Thursday I had a three hour episode of fluttering, extra beats etc. This happened again Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. I called the Doctor on Saturday and he wants me to increase the sotalol to 80mg twice a day. Quite frankly I'm afraid of the side effects this medicine can cause. Should I do this, is it going to help? He thinks I'm just really sensative to the extra beats. He says most people don't feel these at all. But I sure do and it scares the heck out of me. I use to love to go on vacation and now I'm afraid to go away from home at all. Some people say maybe I'm having anxiety attacks. I ususally get these when I'm in bed at night but last week it was after I ate lunch, then dinner. And I always feel sick in my stomach while I'm having these. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was put on sotalol after an episode of Afib and after about a month my palpitations got much worse.  My doctor took me off of it immediately and changed my meds.  Sotalol is one of the beta blockers that can actually cause arrythmias.  I will tell the doctor you are uncomfortable with the current medication and ask him if you can switch to something else.
