Is it ME?

Is it ME?

My daughter, who is 23, went to the ER with a heart rate of 188.......they admitted her, did an echo, questioned ASD, did a TEE, it was fine, sent her home on toprol 25mg...after a week of monitoring her........while in the hospital she got tachy around 150 while walking to the bath room.....often....I think she is overreacting, and so is her doctor.....he even gave her his private cell phone numvber, should she feel "faint" or have another "episode"..........now she had a follow up office visit, and he put her on a 24 Holter, just in case she is tachy and not knowing it..To me, this all seems like much ado about nothing..............she has always been a bit of a hypochondriac, (narcissist.)  Doesn't this seem like an  over kill?  She says she feels better.  Personally, I think the cardiologist took a fancy to her because she has a tattoo on her wrist in Hindu that says, of all things "impermanence" and he could read it.  Oh, he will call her at home with the report, so she doesn't have to schedule another office visit.  He does seem very caring......talked to for about 20 minutes on the phone.  I man if I were in bed for a week, my heart rate would go up when I go up too.  Maybe I am just being a hard nose.

Calm down.  What exactly was her diagnosis?  Was she at the gym when it happened?  Why did they admit her?  That seems a bit overkill.  It isn't normal to get rates of 150 while walking to the br.  Maybe she has IST?  I wonder why the med but who knows?

med is to control her HR and symptoms.

After ruling out SVT, I was recently diagnosed with IST, as was my daughter, and the docs basically said no big deal, offered us beta's and sent us on our merry way. My mother has had it since her 30's and Inderal was her docs drug of choice to stop it.
My daughter and I take nothing and do fine with it.  Personally, I hate how beta's make me feel and feeling tired and sluggish isn't an option for me, lifes just too damn short.

As you probably know, people with IST are hypersensitive to adrenaline. It usually strikes women between the ages of 20 and 40, comes and goes for years, etc., etc.,...
One way to know for sure would be to track her pulse during the day. When mines acting up, my resting heart rate is around 90 and 120, sleeping, around 80.

Keeping hydrated, staying away from stimulants, as well as stress reduction seems to alleviate it for the most part. I agree, staying in bed for a week would make anyones heart rate shoot up after getting up.
From one mother to another, I'd get her the book by Claire Weekes called Hope and Help for your Nerves and insist she read it...having a mother with heart conditions can certainly cause a child to become a bit of a hypochondriac, I've been there.....

Best to you and yours!

They did the TEE test at the ER??  I had to be scheduled for that test, and had to wait two weeks, and my EKG as well as my echo were abnormal.  EKG showed a previous MI (which after many tests I found out I never had), the echo showed "severe" mitral valve leakage which was also false, the TEE test showed only mild leakage.  But at the time I and they (doctors/cardiologist) did not know that the EKG and echo were false yet I still had to wait two weeks for the TEE test.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's recent trip to the hospital.  I guess if it all turns out to be "benign," the doctor will have felt he covered all bases.  In the meantime, maybe it helps your daughter to accept what's going on.  Guess you just have to let her follow up with the doctor and keep you informed.  Maybe you are a little hardened to it all b/c you've seen lots of people in very critical conditions.  Hopefully, the tests will come out fine and your daughter can move on.  Good luck!  It's a whole different when it's our kids, big or little : )

no.they admitted her and kept her on a monitor for 5 days..........now he is talking about EP studies.  And yes, she is very sensitive to things like caffeine......Starbucks coffee got her so sick she had to cut classes in college, now that I think of it.  hmmmm.  I have noticed that here in Florida, when it is off season, the doctors tend to order more tests. ( and the dentists find more work that "has" to be done.)

The dentists during ALL seasons nationwide always find more work that needs to be done. :)  Don't you love when they try to convince you that your old fillings which do not give you any trouble at all should be replaced with new ones?  But this is a topic for the dental board, and not the heart board :)

Any chance she has Dysautonomia?  It can cause all kinds of wacky symptoms including tachycardia upon doing minor acitivities like walking across the room.

Here is some info.  Unfortunately, there is not one "magic" treatment.  I am 99% sure I have it but there isn't a whole lot I can do about it but manage the symptoms as they come.

They did not check her for that, and the treatment would be the same, I think.    She did pass out at the gym about 5 years ago, and had many tests, all neg, and the doctor concluded that "all girls are entitled to a couple swoons in their life."  That was another doc.

EP studies aren't indicated for minor things.  There are those with tens of thousands of ectopics,  SVTs and other tachycardias that have never been and probably never would be referred to the EP lab, so I suspect your daughter's doctor is truly interested in her heart and not the tattoo on her wrist.  Passing out, regardless of the cliche of girls being prone to this, warrants investigation.  Switch focus more to the fact that it's great she has a compassionate and thorough physician, and if there is something more serious here, they're doing everything to find it.

And remember, even if you believe she worries overly much about her health, hypochondriacs aren't immune to real medical problems.

I hope all is well with her.
