Is there no specific treatment, or all trial and error?

I'm a 40 year old fit male, Frequent the health club regularly.
On the 23rd of December 2010 i got an episode of Atrial flutter, was on warfarin for 2 weeks.
I was then in Sinus Rythum. Been great since!
However i've had a futher two episodes of Atrial Fibrillation today and 5 days ago first thing in the morning lasting 35 minutes.
I'm confused after reading al these stories about Ablation and people still having to go on medicatons and repeated ablations. My Consultant has asked me either ablation or medication. I don't know what to say. Has anybody here in their 40's has an ablation or medication and gone back to living a healthy normal life again going to the health club regularly without complications???

At your relatively young age I think ablation is the first the best path.  This assumes your AFib is troubling.   I understand the odds of ablation working is better if done early, before AFib becomes permanent or frequent.   Ablation is the only cure, medications just treat/control the symptoms.  I believe most ablations work, and allow the patient to get off all medications.

I would take the surgeon (specialist in ablation) recommendation, if he thinks the odds are strongly in your favor (better than 80% would be good enough for me) for a cure, I go go for it.

Good luck,

We have to remember the people with negative results with ablation are probably more likely to write a post that success stories. That said, ablation is invasive and permanent and I would only consider it when drugs can not control them.  Look into CRYO as well as  RF procedures.
