Metaprolol and tinitis

Metaprolol and tinitis

I've been on metaprolol tartate for svt for aprox 3 weeks now.50am/pm.  I have developed tinitus in both ears.
Did some research on Internet and it does not sound good. I noticed it increased as my dose increased. Also I never had any skipped beats and preebeats and now I notice them.
My blood pressure is lower than before which is good and I'm not having any svt big runs.
So what should I do besides call my dr mon.
His nurse said that side effect is better than svt's right? Pharmacist said maybe it will go away after couple weeks?  Internet said it's hearing loss and sometimes permanent.  Help? Advise please. Kim.

Maybe you should ask your dr. for another beta blocker? There are lots of them and not all have the same side effects. There are also other medications you can take to prevent SVT (depending on which SVT you have).

How low is your blood pressure?

Well, if you have SVT, you have premature beats too :) But with beta blockers, the heart rate can get too slow, allowing more of those premature beats to occur. They are far more likely to show up when the heart rate is below 60.

Side effects are as far as I know very unlikely to be permanent.. but I've never heard of this before. Ask your doctor and maybe another doctor for a second opinion?

Keep us updated on this, it was interesting.

Yes, there are a number of different anti-arrhythmics you the can try.  What dosage are you on?  Personally, I found that Metoprolol did nothing to quell my SVT.  But it did make conversion of them easier.

You guys are awesome. I am on 50mg am and pm. I am going to take my bp at rite aid and see what it is. Then I am going to ask pharmacist  if I could cut my dose to 25 am and pm  like I started on. I noticed it when u increased my dose.
If I ever ( probably will) have another svt run I am going to try to convert thing.  I had not known about it before.
Never had big one yet since on metaprolol just the little weird beats which I never noticed.
At first I was looking fwd to ablation but after being on this forum I'm not quite sure of it's cure rate. ...?
What if my svt is caused by hormones and stress and they can't fix it?
I have the night sweats often.
Anyhow the wealth of information available here is amazing. We can really  relate  in this weird heart journey.  Really unless you have this personally I can see how no one would believe us. Especially when blood work and other tests come out "normal". I think I would rather a strange rash that doctors could see. :) haha
Thank u again for sharing.

Yes, when you're not having an episode, quite often things look perfectly normal.  Then the doctor suspects anxiety.

By conversion, I meant using learned techniques to convert your heart normal rhythm.  For me, Valsalva worked every time.  Metoprolol made it that much easier.

Ablation for common forms of SVT have a very high success rate; in the mid 90%.  Those that have failed are often because the problem area was near the AV node the "gatekeeper" of your pulse.  Other successful ablations may heal over restoring the accessory pathway and must be done again.  Do not fear this procedure!  It changed my life and may do the same for you.

By the way, 100mg/daily is a lower dosage, so you have a lot of room for adjustment.  Some patients can be on dosages of up to 400mg./daily.  I found 200mg./day to be my limit.  I felt like a zombie walking in concrete boots.

Do not accept "well, the side effect is better than svt."  Your concerns deserve to be heard and you are ultimately the one with veto power.  I think there is a tendency for doctors to brush this kind of heart issue off as if it is not a big deal.  I mean, we're not dying, right?  It doesn't mean we don't want to live as normal a life as possible.  Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease:)  You have the right and to speak out when you have issues.  Good luck to you.

I was trying to give that question to Tom.

How long after quitting Metaprolol did it fade?

Is it ok to cut my dose back on metaprolol to my start dose of 25 am / pm?  Would that even help?
My bp was first 150/85 then after sitting there for a minute is was 127/75.  Pulse 63.

I just replied to your message.  BTW, I do not experience tinnitus with Metoprolol.
