Mitral valve prolapse, pain, and fast heart rate

by scooter700, Sep 18, 2008 03:12PM
I found out I had Mitral Valve Prolapse with regurgitation. I was even diagnosed with MVP syndrome. Last night I was having sex with my wife and when we were finished I felt my pulse and it was unusually fast. I placed my finger in my Pulse Oximeter and it read 234 bpm and then went up to 250bpm. I was afraid, my legs felt heavy but I don't know if I was just experiencing an Anxiety Attack. My heart rate came down but hung out at 130bpm until I laid back down. My blood pressure was 102/72. The other thing is on my left side about four inches under my armpit was a sharp stabbing pain that seem to radiate to my back. I can't tell what is what. Is this normal or should I have it checked out? I also been diagnosed with GERD and gastritis plus the anxiety disorder which I was told comes from the MVP Syndrome. Please Please Help!

I have MVP & MVP syndrome and have been told that it is common to experience anxiety as a result.  I am not sure why there is a link between the 2 but I am considering going on anti-anxiety medication to help combat it. I do not like the idea of being on those kinds of medications however if it will help me it's worth it. Are you taking any beta-blockers or calcium-channel blockers for your MVP or medication for your GERD?  I take atenolol for the MVP and aciphex for the GERD.  Do you have arrythmias as well?  I know the tachicardia can be scary and frustrating. I would let your Dr know about the pain etc.  It's always good to keep them informed.  Wish I could help you more I just wanted to let you know you're not alone!!!

Hi, I don't know about MVP Syndrome, never heard of it.  But I do have MVP and have dealt with it all my life and was diagnosed when I was 19.  I have never had any pain with it.  That specific symptom makes me think there might be something else going on.  I would definitely talk to your Dr. about the pain.  Good Luck.
